Swedish-made quality, innovative design and a customer-specific solution. HSP Gripen, based in Hudiksvall, has delivered its largest terminal bucket to date. The new giant bucket can handle thirty-six tons fully loaded, has a capacity of eighteen cubic meters, and weighs nearly twelve tons. Custom-built for heavy duty cargo handling, it marks a milestone in the company’s production and engineering development.

Growing interest from European ports is clearly noticeable for the Swedish industrial company HSP Gripen.

“Customers appreciate that our products are entirely made in Sweden – from design to materials. It stands for quality, sustainability, and reliability,” says Maria Flöjt, CEO of HSP Gripen. “As a relatively small company, we also have the ability to be responsive to customer-specific requests, which many value highly.”

Custom Engineering on a Record Scale

The project began with a customer inquiry in autumn 2023. In January 2024, six months of design and engineering work began in close collaboration with the client, followed by production, which enabled the bucket to be delivered in June 2025 to OP System. The end user is the Port of Sölvesborg.

“Machines in the industry are becoming increasingly larger, and the tools must keep up with this development. Innovation and new ways of thinking are in our DNA, which enables us to take on projects of this scale,” says Emil Asplund, Export Sales at HSP Gripen.

The unique bucket is designed to handle heavy material—up to two tons per cubic meter—and can lift a full thirty-six tons when fully loaded. The result is increased productivity, shorter turnaround times and improved profitability for the customer.

Standard products and customization

HSP Gripen offers a comprehensive standard range of grapples and buckets for the terminal segment, but it is in custom projects like these where the company’s innovation truly shines.

“In special projects, it is particularly important to have thorough cost estimates, material planning, and time calculations before getting started. Even though the process is longer, our customers see great value in getting exactly the tool they need,” says Maria Flöjt.

The bucket involved extensive engineering work and well thought solutions.

“There are only three different hose lengths in the design, which reduces the need for a wide variety of spare parts. Our smaller terminal buckets typically have two hydraulic cylinders, while this one, for example, has four,” says Pär Swedh, design engineer and project manager for the bucket.

“The challenge was eliminating any torsional movement in the frame, which we solved with a box-style structure that absorbs the twisting and bending forces.”

Material selection has followed a clear strategy, as well as the in-house production solutions.

“We use only HARDOX and STRENX in the parts of the construction exposed to wear and high stress,” says Daniel Fors, Head of production. “Our hydraulic cylinders are also designed and manufactured in-house, which gives us great flexibility to meet customer demands without relying on standard components.”

The delivery to the Port of Sölvesborg demonstrates that Swedish design does not just lift loads, it lifts businesses.
